With the temperature rising to a sweltering 14 degrees centigrade we missioned up to Afriski to see what the wonderful snow makers had come up with and we weren’t disappointed.
The slope is up at lift tower 6 and the park is about half open, really not bad considering we weren’t even riding this time last year.
The big air is open and a few features have been dug in. So some good shred can be had for all.
This weekend saw the first of what is going to be a series of signature features being built on Saturday evening to be sessioned on Sunday morning, a little idea myself and Mike at scratch came up with just to make this years video that much more interesting. This weekend was the cannon bonk feature.
It proved to be quite a challenging one but Errol Technine Kraus managed to kill it throwing down one of the cleanest front 1 to switch back 1 nose bonk’s I have ever seen.
Look out for a new feature this Sunday.
Remember Kings cup and Quiksnow are rapidly approaching so get your bookings in now so you aren’t disappointed.
So on Thursday 24th of June while most people were watching the footie, a bunch of people gathered at Gone Skiing to watch a little video in technicolour Mike from Scratch media had thrown together.
The vid showcased snowboarding over the past 5 or so years in Southern Africa. Shit things have changed a lot, snowboarding has progressed from riding slopes with grass poking through to shredding street rails in down town Joburg and perfectly manicured parks at Afriski.
A big shout out has to go to Mike for his dedication to filming snowboarding in Southern Africa and to the riders who go out every weekend and push them selves to make Mikes videos look as good as they are.
Once the video had ended the usual gone skiing party kicked off and im sure a few headaches were felt on friday morning, puza friday.
See you guys up in the mountains soon if you ever want to get into one of Mikes masterpieces.
Forget your tight pants and tiedye, the gangsta’s are back, check out this sick teaser from the new Technine & MFM movie ‘The Arena’, Cole has done another sick job, can’t wait for this… Film of the Year Playa!!!
Check out the poster for this years Kings at Afriski, it looks like the dates have been tweaked to cover Thursday to Saturday to give you football fans chance to get home for the World Cup Final.
Winter is finally here and it’s kicking in with a bang. I think it’s snowing in the cape as I type this and well Afriski is looking nice and white after a few snowfalls on the weekend.
So the resort was officially opened to the public from Saturday and the new snow making pumps are finally installed and tested which should give the snow makers enough juice to get from top to bottom in about two days, pretty intense! The new sled was unpacked this week, well it’s not new but at least we have a sled, so those shoots and comps can look like the X-Games with guys being towed up and down.
From the pic im sure you can see the lack of snow on the newly revamped dirt kicker but with cold weather moving in this week and overnight lows of -15c i have managed to use my powers of persuasion to get our snow makers to point that lovely fan gun right into the park.
At the moment there are two flat box features set up, the slope is only running 300 meters.
But by the weekend we should have some more features set up.
Go check out the new Afriski website for a more updates www.afriski.co.za
Remember guys pay your snowboarder club membership fees and get your bookings for Quiksnow in 1-4 August its going to be off the hook.
